The chart combines information in illustrations and text mainly from the visions recorded in Daniel and Revelation. In addition, there is a small section devoted to information from Hebrews 9 about Christ’s high priestly ministry in the sanctuary in heaven.
The publisher’s information appears below the title. This information identifies the chart as the one that Ellen White was given in vision, which was published by Otis Nichols in 1850. This is the chart referred to as the 1850 chart.
The chart has five major columns.Each column represents a chapter progressing through Daniel and Revelation. The two on the left align the visions of Daniel 2 and Daniel 7. The column directly to the right of the central column, aligns Daniel 8, Revelation 12, 13, and 17 with the visions of Daniel 2 and Daniel 7.
The column on the far right side of the chart is devoted to explaining the three woes (Rev 8:13).
The narrow central column is a timeline and is marked off with lines that separate it and make it stand out from the surrounding illustrations and text.
God sent His angel to move upon the heart of a farmer [William Miller] who had not believed the Bible, to lead him to search the prophecies. Angels of God repeatedly visited that chosen one, to guide his mind and open to his understanding prophecies which had ever been dark to God’s people. The commencement of the chain of truth was given to him, and he was led on to search for link after link, until he looked with wonder and admiration upon the Word of God. He saw there a perfect chain of truth. That Word which he had regarded as uninspired now opened before his vision in its beauty and glory. He saw that one portion of Scripture explains another, and when one passage was closed to his understanding, he found in another part of the Word that which explained it. He regarded the sacred Word of God with joy and with the deepest respect and awe. As he followed down the prophecies, he saw that the inhabitants of the earth were living in the closing scenes of this world’s history, yet they knew it not. EW 229
The two columns on the left and the central column all come to an end at a line that separates them from material at the bottom of the chart. The last text that comes just before the line in the column on the far left and the central column is the year 1844. The two columns to the right of the narrow central column, extend beyond the line marked 1844.
Just below the 1844 line in the second column from the left and the central column are two boxes dealing with Christ’s high priestly ministry in heaven. An L-shaped box on the left of this section gives the order of events immediately connected with Christ’s return.
The box in the bottom right-hand corner of the chart explains three key prophetic time periods: 2520, 2300, and 1260 years.
